Open Source Software for the Academic Library
Author(s): Vijay Bajirao Jadhav
Abstract - Open source software refers to software whose source code is publicly available for anyone to use, modify, and distribute without any licensing fees or restrictions. Open source software can be particularly beneficial for non-profit organizations, academic institutions, and small businesses that may have limited budgets. Open-source software can be a good choice for academic libraries that require flexibility, customization, and cost-effectiveness. However, it's important to evaluate each software option based on its specific features and benefits, as well as the library's specific needs and requirements. There are many open source software options available for academic libraries, including digital library software, integrated library systems, and office productivity software, among others. By carefully evaluating and selecting open source software options that meet their specific needs, academic libraries can take advantage of the many benefits of this software and provide high-quality services to their patrons.
