The Adoption of Microsoft Excel in Resource Processing (Cataloguing and Classification) Section and Readers’ Services (Circulation) Section of University Library, University of Uyo, Uyo Akwa Ibom State, South – South, Nigeria

Abstract – The paper is a proposal on the adoption of Microsoft excel in resources processing (cataloguing and classification section and readers’ services (circulation section) of university library Uyo. University of Uyo. It enumerates the functions of circulation section, cataloguing and classification section of university, library University of Uyo. The paper reveals that without the circulation of information resources in any library, no matter the qualities and quantities of the resources stocked when the resources are not circulated to the users it is a museum. Moreover, it revealed the importance of cataloguing and classification (processing) of information resources that, it enables users to have access into the holdings of a library, if access is not created to any resource in the library such resource is as good as lost in the library. Retrieval of such information source will be difficult. Furthermore, this paper defined Microsoft excel as an electronic spreadsheet program that is used for storing, organizing and manipulating data. It explained that Microsoft excel can be used in calculation of library stock, in cataloguing and classification (processing) of library resources and in circulation of library resources. Therefore, the paper recommended amongst others that academic libraries can adopt the use of Microsoft excel in their cataloguing and classification (processing) of information and in their daily circulation routines.
